Cunina Boarding School in Sekha

The Cunina Boarding School in Sekha started in 2008 and now provides services to over 300 students till date.

Why has Cunina started this project?

Children that live in and around Sekha did not have access to education. You had to walk for three hours to get to the nearest quality school. The operating costs of the school, including the fees of the teachers, are paid by Cunina and all the children of school age are supported by a Cunina sponsor. Due to the poor infrastructure of existing schools in the region, Cunina started their own partner schools where Khandbari’s business community can send their children, instead of sending their children to Kathmandu at a young age. Further, students from impoverished families are able to get high quality education through sponsorships. In fact, a lot of families moved to live closer to the school.

The entire premise of cunina is to provide quality and affordable education to students living in remote areas. The average monthly cost for students to attend our school is Rs. 800, which is mcuh cheaper than other private schools in the region.

What has Cunina done in the past?

Cunina purchased the land for the Cunina Boarding School in 2008. At the time, there were only rice terraces here. Firstly, the land had to be leveled, which is quite a task! People from the neighborhood were very curious and came to look at the large excavators. While wearing slippers, the workers – women too – used pickaxes to cut the bricks for the school out of rocks. Some of the workers applied mortar. It was a very medieval situation. This is how we built the kindergarten and primary school. Together they consist of fourteen classrooms, toilets, a recreation hall and a janitor’s office, which is used to guard the school.

We have completed the first Music & Arts school in this area. Teaching children to read, calculate and write is important, but they also have the right to develop their talents and creativity.

What will Cunina do in the future?

At the moment we are planning to engage students through a sports development program to improve overall well-being of the children. Further, to help make access to the school, easier, we are planning to start a school bus service to make it accessible for more students to attend the school.
